Fernandez Family

Roland and Sini Fernandez and family

Q: When did you become part of Bear Creek?

A: We became members of the Bear Creek community in fall of 1999 when our twins, Elizabeth '12 and Lucas '12, were kindergarteners. It was a crazy time for Bear Creek. The school had hoped to open the Redmond Campus that fall but delays in construction caused all the plans to be pushed back a year and the school had to scramble for classroom space for all its students. Our kids attended at the short-lived Branch Campus that year. The facilities were less than stellar, but the curriculum was amazing, and the community we grew to love took root in our hearts. The following year the kids moved to Woodinville Campus at the Bear Creek Community Church, and Catherine '14, our youngest, started kindergarten in 2001.

When the twins were in sixth grade, Valley Campus opened right after Christmas, so the kids attended there too and that’s when Sini, Marketing and Communications Manager, started working for the school in the Valley Campus Library, moving to MarCom shortly thereafter. Eventually, we made it to the Redmond Campus in fall 2006 when Elizabeth and Lucas started Middle School. Catherine graduated in 2014 before the Upper School building opened. Sini always thought she would retire after Catherine graduated, but here it is six years later, and she still loves promoting the school and its mission to our community. Even the number of Grizzlies in our family has grown since Catherine married her Bear Creek sweetheart, Collin Feight '14, in 2018.

Q: Why did your family choose our school?

A: We chose Bear Creek because the mission statement resonated with us and we thought the classical education model made a whole lot of sense. Bear Creek teachers had high expectations of all their students, and it was a joy to see our children work to accomplish what was expected of them.

Q: What has been your best experience here?

A: It’s hard to pick one “best” experience, but the combined experiences of supporting our children during their high school sports careers were pretty great. We loved watching our kids and our kids’ teammates, many of whom had been their friends and classmates since kindergarten. We loved cheering from the stands with our friends (parents of their classmates). Sini loved sharing her sports photography with the school, and Roland was able to share his love of all things video by "filming" each game for our kids' coaches. We loved supporting the athletics program through our involvement as volunteers and as a Grizzlies Booster Club board member as well as financially through philanthropic donations.

Q: Why has your family chosen to invest philanthropically in the school through annual donations?

A: We invest philanthropically in the school simply because we believe in the mission of The Bear Creek School. We have been blessed with amazing friends and colleagues during our tenure with the school and have watched so many graduates leave the Bear Creek “bubble” ready to engage the world with wisdom, compassion, and courage. We are proud to help the school accomplish its mission to enable each student to become the individual God intends.

The Fernandez family has faithfully supported Bear Creek's Annual Fund for over 20 years. They are being formally inducted this year as lifetime members of the Fidelis Circle.
