Upper School Math Team meets once per week. There are 3 primary aspects to math team. First, we spend time on four different aspects of mathematics which are important but not part of the curriculum covered in math class. This year we spent time working on topics in number theory, probability, advanced geometry and advanced algebra. A second important aspect of US Math Team is preparation for math competition exams. We currently compete in the AMC 10/12, AIME, USAMO and the Washington State “Math is Cool” competitions. And finally, we will occasionally spend time watching films which explore particular mathematicians or significant benchmarks in the history of mathematics. Upper Math Team meets for 32 sessions (48 hrs.) per year.

After graduating from a math and science academy in Las Vegas, NV, Mrs. Probst went on to earn Bachelor's degrees in both Mathematics and Business Administration. She has a Master's degree in Secondary Education and has completed more than half of her doctorate degree in Education. She will start her dissertation on the timing of algebra instruction next year. Mrs. Probst teaches at Bear Creek after teaching all levels of Algebra (Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2) at a classical, Christian school in Pennsylvania. She is married and has three kids - two of whom are enrolled in Middle School at Bear Creek.

Mrs. Stevenson has a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics and has taught everything from Algebra 1 to Calculus. This is her second year at the Bear Creek School, and she is looking forward to working with the Upper School Math Team.

Chess4Life is committed to bringing an excellent program with a positive learning environment to Bear Creek. Chess study has shown to increase math skills, concentration, memory, and self-confidence. All students, of any skill level, are welcome.

The mission of Chess4Life is teaching life skills through chess and, in doing so, positively impact as many children's lives as possible. Through the game of chess we endeavor to teach character qualities and the importance of a core set of values. We do this through the instruction of our proprietary curriculum and, perhaps more importantly, our own personal example. We stand by the adage that what we do frequently speaks louder than what we say. Our promise is that students at Chess4Life will learn chess, learn life skills, and have fun. Seeing children develop into confident, persistent achievers is a wonderful reward for the work put into making Chess4Life happen. Chess4Life focuses on encouraging students at all levels, developing sportsmanship and ''team play,'' and providing the right environment and experiences that students need in order to excel in chess and their personal endeavors throughout the course of their lives.

Coding with Kids

Want to become a coding ace and write your own games? Join the after-school Coding with Kids club! Both beginners as well as returning, intermediate level students are welcome! BEGINNERS will use fundamental coding concepts, such as loops, conditionals, and variables, to create fun interactive stories, quizzes, or simple games. INTERMEDIATE students will be introduced to more advanced concepts, such as nested conditionals and functions, which will allow them to build advanced projects, for example multi-level maze or platformer games. The programming tool we use in class is Scratch (scratch.mit.edu), a drag-and-drop environment developed by MIT Labs for kids. No typing skills required. Scratch provides lots of creative outlets, such as backgrounds, characters, sounds and colors, which makes coding even more fun! To quickly see what kids can create in Scratch, watch this little video: http://vimeo.com/80961102. Class meets for 15 sessions.

For $44 each week, students will create delicious dishes focusing on the importance of local ingredients, scratch cooking, & natural preservatives while practicing kitchen safety & providing their family with dinner! Each week students will follow recipes, learn the science behind the use of different ingredients and the important role herbs spices and veggies play in flavoring our favorite foods. Each entrée serves 4 to 6 and is packaged in oven-ready cookware with baking instructions. We will provide vegetarian options upon request. **We’re unable to provide gluten free or dairy free classes, but all classes are nut free. ** Please contact Samantha with any questions rainydaydinnerclub@gmail.com

Samantha Smith's background is in kitchen management and youth development. She has worked for Boys and Girls Club, Redmond Teen Programs, and Friends of Youth. As a cook even she found it hard to cook dinner every night. She hopes to take some of the pressure off parents by having students bring home dinner once a week. Sam believes that our community’s investment in children’s nutrition needs to run deeper than our dinner plates. By combining culinary skills with her love of working with youth she has created a program that ignites food creativity and adventure in students. Providing a space for students to become the teacher at dinner over a family meal.

You don’t have to make dinner tonight!

Each week, students learn basic cooking skills while making dinner for their family!

Students will create delicious dishes focusing on the importance of local ingredients, scratch cooking, and natural preservatives while practicing knife skills and kitchen safety.

As students follow recipes, they will learn the science behind the use of different ingredients involved and the important role herbs, spices and veggies play in flavoring our favorite dishes. Each entrée will serve 4 to 6 and will be packaged in oven ready cookware with baking instructions. We add 5 new recipes each session!http://www.rainydaydinnerclub.com/current-menu.html

We will provide vegetarian options upon request at registration.

**Our meals are nut free, but we’re unable to provide gluten free or dairy free classes.**

Pack 581 is made up of about 30 to 40 boys. Grade-level Den meetings are held once a month (day varies by Den), typically from 3:45 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Pack meetings with the entire group of boys are held on Tuesday nights (6:45 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.), also once a month. Check out the calendar of meeting dates, times, and locations for the Pack and Dens (coming soon!).

Boys learn traditional Scouting skills, as well as teamwork and service. The Pack participates in at least one service project each year. Camps and camp outs are a highlight for many Pack members. Parents love Scouting too! Camp outs, monthly pack meetings, and other projects are all great opportunities to enjoy activities with your boys. Dues, paid separately after registration, are $85 annually. A parent volunteer leads each grade level Den in a meeting held once a month after school, and parent volunteers run the Pack meetings (grades K-5 meeting all together), one evening per month. The Cub Scout organization provides all training for parents, so no prior experience is necessary. Volunteers do need a willingness to learn and help young boys in fun activities. Please contact Liz Hembree if interested in volunteering.
