Kristen Gephart, Lower School Division Head

Dear Parents,

Greetings from The Bear Creek School! I am thrilled your family will be joining our community, and I hope you’re already enjoying a great summer. As we prepare for next year, I am thinking about you and anticipating a beautiful school journey together! As you read this, I am away on a family trip, hiking in God’s creation. I am so inspired whenever I travel or trek to places beyond my regular routine. This summer I hope you too are able to ramble and roam a bit outside your normal activities.

We have a loving God who knows our steps and is aware of the places we travel. I know that our Lord is with each of us on every step of the path. He has also designed us for community and knows and works through the people who are part of our journey. I love that The Bear Creek School is intentional in recognizing that each student is on an individual journey and part of a dynamic community. I am getting so excited to have you here on campus and start of our “travels” together when the school year begins.

New Parent Welcome and Orientation If you did not attend orientation in May, please RSVP and plan to attend on Monday, August 19. At orientation, you will receive lots of detailed information, and we will have a chance to get to know each other. Whether or not you attended in May, please check out the "Parent Orientation" tab on the MyBC/Parents page on the school website. No password is required, and you will find useful links to help you prepare for the first day of school.

Summer Reading Program Both libraries in the Main Building at Redmond Campus will be open this summer on Wednesdays July 10, 17, 24, 31, and August 21 from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Students in grades 1-6 participating in our Summer Reading Program can earn a free dress day. Kindergarten students will be introduced to Accelerated Reader (AR) once school has started but are encouraged to check out the books in the library this summer.

Summer Play Dates are scheduled for Wednesdays this summer on July 10 (kindergarten), July 17 (grade 1), July 24 and August 21 (grades 2-4), plus Monday, August 19 (grades K-1). Join the fun on the playground at Redmond Campus from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Meet new classmates and connect with old friends! Bring a blanket, ball, or other fun outside toys. Snacks and refreshments provided.

School Supplies Bear Creek provides most of the regular school supplies, but there are a few personal items students may need depending on the grade level. Lower School supply lists are posted on our website.

School Uniforms Lower School students wear dress uniforms on Tuesdays for Chapel and on other designated days like field trips. All dress uniform sweaters, pants, and skirts must be purchased through DENNIS Uniform. See the School Uniforms page for ordering information and additional details. On Wednesday, August 7, Bear Creek will host both new and used uniform sales at the Upper School (see School Calendar).

Back-to-School Registration Due August 8 In mid-July, you will receive access to the Parent Portal using your Bear Creek credentials, and all parents will be sent a Back-to-School Registration email with detailed instructions for reviewing and updating your Household Profile; completing the Back-to-School Registration policy form; and printing, signing, and submitting a few forms. Most of our school waivers are signed online as part of Back-to-School Registration. Included with Back-to-School Registration, you will find information about school health and immunization requirements, field trips, publicity, computer and internet use.

When updating your Household Profile, it is not necessary to add an email address for Lower School students. Teachers will only email their students' parents. Additionally, please ensure that each parent has a unique email address. Email addresses may not be shared by family members. All online and printed pieces are due Thursday, August 8.

Back-to-School Cookies at the Creek All Lower School students, new and returning, are encouraged to attend Cookies at the Creek on Thursday, August 29 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Come visit your child's classroom, drop off school supplies, if you wish, and meet your child’s teacher and classmates. This is a fun annual event, and I look forward to seeing you there! (Class lists will be posted on the MyBC/Parents page of the school website on August 28.)

First Day of School Classrooms open at 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3. School begins at 8:40 a.m., and the school day ends at 3:25 p.m. Students wear dress uniforms on the first day of school.

Inside Bear Creek As part of your orientation to Bear Creek, please plan to join Patrick Carruth, President and Headmaster, and Debbie Marchione, Vice President of Philanthropy and Community Engagement, at Inside Bear Creek on October 2 at 6:30 p.m. This gathering will provide you with important practical information about how to get involved in the Bear Creek community as a parent, an understanding of how the school functions beyond the classrooms, and an opportunity to connect with other new families. Look for an email in August with more details.

I will send another Division Head Update in August. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions. I am out of the office during the month of July, but if you need to connect with someone during this time, please contact Lower School Division Assistant Cady Reimer at creimer@tbcs.org or 425-898-1720 ext. 116.

With joy,

Kristen Gephart
