Counselor-in-Training
The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program at Bear Creek Summer Camp is designed to offer qualified young people an opportunity to prepare for positions as summer camp counselors. Emphasis is placed upon developing leadership skills, sensitivity to children, and program skills.
Participation in the CIT program is by selection. Those interested in the program must complete an application process. This is a volunteer position, but students who are selected as CITs may record all hours worked as Community Service hours.
Counselor-in-Training Requirements
- Applicants must be Bear Creek students entering grades 9-12 at the time of participation.
- Applicants must possess a genuine interest in the camping/youth development field, and in working with younger campers, and be willing to commit the required energy, enthusiasm, and cooperation in all aspects of the training and hands-on portions of the program.
- Demonstrate emotional maturity and stability to guide in decisions, to accept criticism and be self-confident.
- Be interested: in the camp, its traditions and ideals; events and activities; the campers, their ideas, undertakings and problems.
- Ability to sense and assume responsibility without having to be told everything.
Training Objectives
- Understand and be able to communicate the overall expectations of the camp counselor.
- Understand the potential consequences of not fulfilling the expectations of the camp counselor.
- Understand all camp rules and the risks associated with campers not following the rules.
- Understand the physical and emotional needs of campers.
Important Information
Applications will be accepted through May 10 and training for CITs will be conducted in late May. Please review the list of camps in need of CITs. If you find a camp that fits your schedule and area of interest and/or expertise, download the application and follow the instructions on the application.
