Feel free to check in with your child's teacher for suggestions on specific areas of growth for your child.

Returning students may also access their Freckle accounts.

Writing

  • Keep a writing journal (decorate it to make it your own). Here are some writing prompts.
  • Keep a diary (write in it each day).
  • Summarize chapters of the books they read (around 3 sentences for each summary, similar to what we did for The Sign of The Beaver
  • Write small-moment stories about your summer vacation.
  • Write letters to relatives and friends.

Reading

  • Connect with a King County Library or participate in the Bear Creek Libraries' Summer Reading Program.
  • Read out loud together (alternate between kid choice and parent choice).
  • Listen to audiobooks or record your own with sound effects (this will do wonders for expression and fluency).
  • Make a goal to read a certain number of books or books from certain genres.
  • Learn about an author and read as many of that author's books that you can find (maybe even write to the author and share what you like about her/his books).

Here is an article from GreatSchools.org with a list of fun, general learning activities and suggestions for the summer before fourth grade.
