Baseball and Track & Field Win at 2024 1A State Championships

We are so proud to announce that the Bear Creek-Overlake Growls won the 2024 1A Baseball State Championship, and senior Braelyn Baker won four individual State titles at the 1A Track & Field State Championships.

The #8 seed Bear Creek-Overlake Growls baseball team defeated #6 Meridian High School Trojans by a score of 3-2 to win its first ever 1A Baseball State Championship. Bear Creek’s Max Bieber, junior, led the way for the Growls, pitching six strong innings and giving up only two runs while also getting the team out of several jams. Zaden Gauthier, junior, went 3-3 at the plate and came in to pitch the seventh inning, earning the win.

In Yakima at the 1A State Track & Field Championships, the Grizzlies battled the wind in some tough, competitive races! 

Braelyn Baker, senior, won four 2024 State titles, taking first place in the 100m with a time of 11.68, first place in long jump with 18’0.25”, first place in the 300m hurdles with a time of 41.04, and first place in the 200m with a time of 23.56. Also, during the 300m hurdles prelims, she ran a 40.92, re-setting all the State records and coming within a second of the all-time national high school record.

Additionally, our athletes put up the following podium finishes:

  • Quinn Smith, senior: javelin, second place
  • Austin Chu, Findlay Hartshorn, Cameron Piepkorn, junior, and William Hartshorn: 4x400m relay, second place
  • Findlay Hartshorn, sophomore: 800m, second place
  • Austin Chu, junior: 400m, sixth place
  • William Hartshorn, senior: 800m, sixth place

The girls team finished in third place for the second year in a row with 48 points. The boys team scored 22 points for an eleventh-place finish.
