Meet: Annemarie Mullet

Last spring I sat down to interview one of the sophomore girls of Bear Creek, Miss Annemarie Mullet. Besides being an avid reader and talented tennis player, Annemarie embraces her Scottish roots through dancing and enjoys painting with watercolors and writing short stories in her free time. Like any student, there are many layers to her personality, and there is certainly much more to Annemarie that what is on the surface.

At first glance, you could assume Annemarie to be a somewhat quiet girl, with her nose always in a book. But in addition to reading, she enjoys doodling, creative writing, and crocheting, saying, “I will paint or I’ll write. Like I have a few stories I’ll work on—I do that when I’m stressed because I want to be an author.” When asked about what things she crochets, as that’s not something I hear every day she laughs and adds, “I crochet a lot. I crocheted a cardigan for my sister for Christmas, it took me like a year and a half. But mostly hats, and a lot of stuff for my younger cousins.”

Additionally, Annemarie really emphasized her love of stories and writing above all else, telling me she has dreams of becoming an author or journalist. When asked about her favorite class, she of course responds immediately with, “Lit. I’m very creative and literature-history type of person, I’m not very good at math and science.” She cites her move from public school to Bear Creek for freshman year as a main contributor to her confidence in herself and in her writing.

While talking to me, it was clear she was thankful for how the school has encouraged her and helped her grow, smiling as she says, “There are fewer people and there’s so much talking and sharing, and your classes are a lot smaller than public school, that I’ve had a chance to really develop myself, which is good, before I moved I wasn’t really sure what I liked.” And after a pause for thought she continues with, “Also I feel like Bear Creek has really helped me develop my faith. I feel like here I’ve learned more about the faith and that it’s more than I thought it was.” The chapel services and Christian-oriented classes are things that some students are so used to; we begin to take it for granted. But students who have transferred from public school to Bear Creek, like Annemarie, can appreciate how it helps them discover their passions and grow in their walk with Christ.

Additionally, Annemarie is an extraordinary tennis player and plays on Bear Creek’s girls tennis team. I asked her what she enjoys about tennis, and she tells me, “I like the community. We all bond, it’s really nice. I started [playing tennis] quite a while back, but it’s more of a hobby I’d say.” After playing for over eight years, Annemarie has established herself as a superpower on the team and played with the senior and junior players even back in her freshman year. Annemarie also works, much to my delight, at Ben & Jerry’s in Kirkland. “That’s definitely my top extracurricular because I’m there all the time. That can sometimes be hard, like I have to do homework while I’m there.”

I was surprised to hear how much Annemarie did outside of school, her life is filled with tennis practice, a job, and even Scottish dancing. “I highland dance, which is a form of Scottish dancing. And that’s just once a week but it’s mostly for fun we don’t do performances or anything.” Then we both shared a laugh and she gives a knowing smile when she explains, “A lot of people don’t know what it is and they think it’s like jigging or something, It’s a specific type of dance that’s very Scottish.” There are several students who express their heritage through some form of dance taken from their culture, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear Annemarie did highland dancing. But dancing isn’t the only thing she misses about Scotland: “Okay so, this is odd, like I said I’m from Scotland, and there we drink something called Iron Brew. It’s basically like a mix between an energy drink and Fanta and it is so good. I wish they had it in America.”

Between her love for literature, growing in her faith, confidence, and balancing extracurriculars like holding down a job, Annemarie is a talented girl, who embodies a zest for learning and a creative, energetic mind. She is thankful to Bear Creek for surrounding her with a caring environment filled with close friends and challenging her to become the best student she can be, both inside and outside the classroom walls.
