Hello Grizzlies Fans,
It's nice to look outside and see some sunshine! I hope you are all enjoying the spring weather and this final stretch of the school year. Those of you who joined us at the Athletics Banquet caught a glimpse of how remarkable our community is and how many talented athletes we have. It was a terrific evening to be a Grizzly and so fun to be all together at a single event. Thank you to the Middle School servers who gave up their night to help us!
We are entering the home stretch in 2018 spring sports season with State tournaments looming. Here is an update on our spring sports teams and athletes. If you want up-to-the-minute information on playoff news, follow the Grizzlies on Twitter @BCGrizzlySports.
Baseball
After winning their sixth consecutive Emerald City League title, the Growls advanced to the Bi-District tournament where their season came to an abrupt close. Unfortunately, the Growls picked a tough time to hit a slump with the bats and lost two consecutive games to Lynden Christian (3-1) and Nooksack Valley (2-0). Despite the losses, the Growls season was a huge success on so many levels with several Grizzlies playing key roles on a team which will undoubtedly be back in full force next season. We're proud of you boys!
Boys Golf
Senior John Hayes along with juniors Oliver Nordberg and Jon Campbell represented Bear Creek on May 15 in the Bi-District Golf Tournament at North Bellingham Golf Course after finishing in the top-14 in the Emerald City League Tournament last fall. Congratulations to John Hayes who shot a 73, coming from behind to win the District 1/2 1A Championship! Oliver finished tied for third with a 79 and helped propel the Grizzlies to a second place finish. Jon played well, but finished just outside of the top-22 needed to qualify for State. Up next for the Grizzlies is the 1A State Golf Tournament next Tuesday and Wednesday, May 22-23 at Liberty Lake in Spokane. Good luck John and Oliver. We'll be rooting you on!
Girls Tennis
The girls tennis team sent six representatives to compete in the Emerald City League Championships on May 11-12 at the Amy Yee Tennis Center in Seattle. Congratulations to senior Julia Maher, junior Melanie Carlson, sophomore Annemarie Mullet, and freshmen Grace McBride, Emily Watson, and Mariana Combariza who qualified for the tournament. Mariana won two singles matches at the tournament and finished in sixth place overall just missing out on a State tournament bid. We are proud of the girls for an outstanding season!
Track & Field
This track season has been nothing short of spectacular with several new school records set this spring. The top track athletes from the league competed in the Emerald City League Championship Meet last week with at least 13 Bear Creek athletes advancing to the Bi-District Track & Field Championships this week starting on Thursday at King's HS in Shoreline. The top-3 finishers and Bi-District qualifiers from the meet include:
