The Bear Creek School

Dear Parents,

We are well into the last two months of school, and we all know this time will go quickly. Teachers have intentional lessons planned to continue growing each student; they are crafting reflection and celebration events to acknowledge the special learning that has taken place, and we are praying as a team that each class will finish strong. My hope is that our Lower School community will savor the beautiful learning and relationships we have each been given this year, pushing us to live lives of wisdom, compassion, and courage.

After School on the Playground
Staying after school is a terrific way to deepen relationships with peers and enjoy friends at this time of year when the weather is warmer. Remember, traffic moves through the playground area after school. For safety, please monitor your child and ensure he or she stays on the bark chips and out the driveway area. Your special vigilance is required if your child plays in the new turf area on the other side of the driveway.

Mothers Tea
The students are so excited to celebrate their moms and have been preparing for this special day. Moms are invited to join us Friday, May 11 in the Cornerstone Theater (here in the Main Building at Redmond Campus). Doors open at 8:00 a.m.; the performance begins at 9:00 a.m. with classroom visits following the musical program.

Math Placement
On Monday May 22, math teachers will send home a letter with each of their students listing his/her anticipated math placement for 2018-2019. Teachers continually assess students throughout the year and use various data points to make placement decisions. They look at student conceptual competency, procedural fluency, as well as other factors to make a "best fit" placement for each student.

Authors & Artists
This annual showcase of visual, literary, and performing art takes place on Thursday, May 24, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Students' work (P3-12) will be displayed in both buildings and on the grounds of Redmond Campus. It will be a full and fun evening with musical performances on the Upper School terrace and food trucks in the Upper School parking lot.

Our campus playground will be closed during the event so that all may enjoy the arts on display. Students in grades K-4 have the option of participating in an Authors & Artists treasure hunt during the evening to help them engage with the event.

End-of-Year Library Dates

  • The last day to take AR tests is Friday, May 25 at 4:00 p.m.
  • The last day to check out library books is also May 25.
  • All Bear Creek library materials are due on Friday, June 1.

Lower School Honors Assembly
Please join us at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, June 4 in the Cornerstone Theater as we celebrate the many accomplishments of our Lower School students. We will highlight student accomplishments such as Accelerated Reader points, team successes, and much more! Our students have worked hard all year long, and this is special time set aside to celebrate the many achievements of our K-4 student body. During the last week of school students should wear dress uniform on both Monday, June 4 and Wednesday, June 6 of the last week of school.

We are putting together a slide show that will play as parents are entering the Cornerstone Theater before the Honors Assembly begins. If your child has participated in a sport or extra-curricular activity during this school year and you have a picture you would like to share, please email it to Cady Reimer creimer@tbcs.org by Friday, May 25. Please send:

  • one high/original resolution photo (file size >1MB),
  • your child's name (or names if several Bear Creek students participated), and
  • the name of the sport or activity.

 Field Day
On Tuesday, June 5, all Lower School and Early Middle School students will enjoy Field Day on Owens Field (gym if it is raining). This fun event is put together by our amazing P.E. teachers, Michele Wyner and Tyler Mendozona. The school will provide a sack lunch, and classes will rotate through activities. Our grade 6 students will help facilitate activities for each of our K-5 classes. Grades K-2 will participate from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., and grades 3-5 will participate from 12:30 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. Students should wear Spirit T-shirts, shorts/pants, and shoes for physical activity.

Summer Reading Program
The Ida Lairson Library and C.E. "Ted" Kindel Library will be open this summer on Wednesdays, July 11 – August 22 from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Students may participate in the optional Summer Reading Program by reading books and taking AR tests during the summer, thereby earning a free dress day on Friday, September 7. Note: This summer, in a change from previous years, the last day to take AR tests is August 22, not the first day of school.

2018-2019 Lower School Grading Periods
Starting in the fall, Lower School will shift from four to three grading periods. We will continue to hold parent/teacher conferences twice yearly, at the end of November and towards the end of March. Parents will receive grade reports at conferences and at the end of the school year. Our teachers will continue to communicate and meet with parents throughout the school year when concerns or issues arise.

2018-2019 Class Placement Information
One of the things that often comes up in conversations at this time of year is class placement for the next school year. We consider many factors in our class placement process including gender balance, academic strengths, learning styles, temperament, and friendships. We cannot take specific teacher requests nor guarantee specific placement, but if you believe there is information we do not have that would be helpful in class placement decisions, please complete the Class Placement Information form and submit it to Lower School Division Assistant Cady Reimer before the end of May. The form contains additional information about the class placement process.

2018-2019 School Uniforms
Our Lower School uniform guidelines are not changing. See the School Uniform page for guidelines and information about ordering online. Here are a few reminders as you prepare to purchase uniform pieces for the next school year:

  • DENNIS Uniform will be on campus selling new school uniforms on Wednesday, August 8, 2:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
  • In the classroom, students may wear sweatshirts with the Bear Creek logo from DENNIS Uniform. At recess, students may other sweatshirts, but those sweatshirts must be removed when students return to the classroom.
  • On dress uniform days, all students must wear a Bear Creek logo sweater. Girls wear Christopher plaid skirts or jumpers, while boys wear navy uniform pants from DENNIS Uniform.

A Fond Farewell
It is always hard to say goodbye to folks who have made a beautiful impact in the life of Bear Creek and in our Lower School. This June Ms. Mary Carpenter will be leaving to pursue the nudge God has given her to teach students with special needs, Mrs. Kinsey Gorman will leave to stay home with Baby Gorman, Miss Juliana Patrick will be pursuing a reading specialist position, and Mrs. Lindsey Cooke will be spending more time with her family. We have hired experienced teachers to join us in the fall, but these teachers will be dearly missed. We wish them all the best!

I am praying that each student will enjoy the special end of the year learning and events. May we continue to grow in wisdom, compassion, and courage as we end this school year together.

With joy,
