Junior Class Update - March 2019
Karen Wright, Ph.D., Upper School Division Head

Dear Junior Class Parents,

On behalf of the academic team, we want to express the joy we’ve experienced these last few weeks working with juniors to complete 2019-2020 course preferences and make plans to support the upcoming college application process. Juniors have already begun marking items off their “to do lists,” such as selecting teachers from whom to request letters of recommendation, fine-tuning a list of great-fit colleges, and understanding what to work on this summer, such as college essays and applications. When they return in the fall, most of these tasks will be complete, and they will be confident and ready to enjoy the wonderful events the senior year has to offer. It is an incredible journey!

I wanted to share a few things happening in the junior class in the coming weeks. First, it’s been such fun to work with the junior class girls to select and design customized “Senior Girls Blazers!” The school will purchase a set of girls’ blazers, and each rising senior girl will be fitted and loaned one to wear during her senior year. While these won’t be ready until late summer, I look forward to having a blazer ceremony for the girls next fall—they will be the first group to wear them, and I can’t think of a more special group of ladies to kick off this tradition!

Additionally, the girls decided they wanted to select a jewelry item (optional family purchase) to wear next year. They have narrowed it down to a sterling silver “friendship ring,” and we are in the final stages of voting for their favorite style. Once we select the ring, I will help coordinate the ordering process. This is such a sweet sentiment, as these ladies have become a close-knit group of friends.

Another touch point I wanted to share with you is related to the month of April and how we will support our students (particularly the junior class) during this time of remembering both Chaz and Joe. Dr. Gephart and Mrs. Slaybaugh are coordinating a variety of support for students next month, including coordinating a place for students to sign cards for the Bruner and Whitlock families.

Finally, as we prepare and plan for the 2019-2020 school year, we prayerfully enter into a time of role change for some faculty members. One change is that Ms. Carhart will be transitioning out of her role in the Office of College Advising. We are thankful for her contributions, for she has blessed the Upper School in many impactful and positive ways. To ensure your family continues to receive excellent college advising, Ms. Carhart will play a large part in this transition process, including writing your son's or daughter’s letter of recommendation, facilitating the feedback process for college essays, helping students customize their college lists, and ensuring each family has access to all of the incredible resources she has fine-tuned for seniors. We are actively screening a large number of highly qualified candidates, and we are truly impressed by our already-rich applicant pool. And as history has shown, the Lord is faithful in who He sends to serve at The Bear Creek School. We are confident we will hire a wonderful replacement.

I look forward to seeing you on campus tomorrow for parent/teacher conferences and/or at the Spoelstra’s home for tea. As always, if you have any questions, please reach out to me.

All's joy,

Karen Wright Ph.D.
