The Advanced Placement Program (AP)

At The Bear Creek School

Answers to your top 10 questions:

(1)  How does an AP class compare to other High School Courses?

Advanced Placement classes are designed to mirror courses offered on college campuses. They are more challenging and require personal discipline and independent study techniques. Students will experience an increased reading load and longer writing assignments in most AP classes. AP courses attract students who are academically motivated, personally invested and diligent.

(2)   Should I sign up for an AP class?

Yes. Students who succeed in AP courses generally do well in college as a result of the exposure to collegiate teaching and testing methodology, and increased academic preparation. It is important to note that because of the challenging content, colleges value AP course experience. All AP courses are noted on the official Bear Creek transcript.

(3)   What is the preferred background to succeed in an AP course?

Successful AP students have a refined skill set in the following areas: ability to analyze content, draw comparisons, and effectively reason through problems. They must be able to read perceptively and independently. Additionally, students need to be proficient in writing concise and clear essays. Students must have a minimum of a B in prior academic department coursework.

(4)   What AP courses will Bear Creek offer in 2007-2008?

  • AP English Language and Composition – 11th grade
  • AP English Literature and Composition – 12th grade
  • AP US History – 11th grade
  • AP European History - 10th and 12th grade

  • AP Statistics - 11th and 12th grade
  • AP Music Theory - 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade
  • AP Spanish Literature - prerequisite of Spanish 3
  • AP Latin Literature - prerequisite of Latin 3

(5)   Do I need to take the AP course in order to take the exam?

No. However, students who take AP courses tend to score higher on AP exams than those students who do not take the course. It is not recommended to take the exam without prior coursework.

(6)   Is there a fee to take the AP course? Exam?

While there are no additional charges to take AP courses, students must pay an exam fee. In 2006, the exams fee was $82 per test, payable to TBCS five weeks prior to the exam. The AP teacher and AP coordinator will collect the exam fees and order testing materials.

(7)   Do I receive college credit?

It depends upon the college/universities where students enroll. The AP exams are given in May. Scores are then reported to the colleges designated by the student. Scores range from 1 (no recommendation) to 5 (extremely qualified). Each college determines the scores that will be accepted for credit, academic placement or advanced standing. Students should contact individual colleges to find out their AP policy. For more information visit www.collegeboard.com/ap/creditpolicy

(8)   How do I register for Bear Creek AP courses?

Fill out the Course Request Form and AP Application and return it to Mrs. Hernandez.

(9)   How do I prepare for next fall’s AP course?

Your departmental summer reading list is an excellent way to expand and broaden your subject knowledge. Consistent, high-level exposure to the great works in each academic discipline is the best preparation for AP and other college level course work.

(10)   How many AP courses should I register for in one academic year?

It depends. Given the high commitment level and increased demand, course selection should be carefully considered. All 11th and 12th grade students should consider at least one AP course per year. Many students carry 2 AP courses. Three AP courses per year will need to be approved in advance by AP Teachers and the Upper School Head. AP courses for 10th grade students will also need to be approved by the Upper School Head and AP Teachers.
